Revisiting Arnold Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder, with its sumptuous orchestration and luxuriant turn-of-the-century harmonic language, inevitably stirs speculation about the operatic possibilities that might have emerged had Schoenberg pursued a stage work during this earlier, more tonally anchored phase of his career. While one remains grateful for Moses und Aron, Gurre-Lieder reveals a keen dramatic instinct and a flair for atmospheric color that, given the right libretto, might have yielded a singular theatrical experience. Still, we are fortunate that this monumental work exists, even if its appearances on the concert stage remain relatively infrequent.

James McCracken brings regal authority and vocal assurance to the role of Waldemar, prompting reflection on why he was never cast as the Kaiser in Die Frau ohne Schatten, a role that shares much in temperament and vocal heft. Gré Brouwenstijn's voice shimmers luminously as Tove, while Nell Rankin makes a vivid impression in her portrayal of the Waldtaube. At the podium, Leopold Stokowski offers his trademark technicolor approach, shaping the orchestral fabric with characteristic glamour.
