Mozart: Don Giovanni - Wächter, L. Price, Berry, Güden, Wunderlich, Sciutti, Panerai; Karajan. Wien, 1963
$14.95
Description:
This is truly a Don Giovanni for the ages. At the heart of the performance is Leontyne Price, captured at the very peak of her powers. Her singing is a stunning blend of control, agility, and sheer vocal beauty. Eberhard Wächter brings a suave, understated confidence to the title role, though his lighter baritone occasionally lacks heft in the lower reaches. Fritz Wunderlich, a paragon of Mozartian style, sings with such elegance and phrasing that the Viennese audience demands an encore of “Il mio tesoro.” The cast is rounded out by Walter Berry as a deft Leporello, Graziella Sciutti as an enchanting Zerlina, Walter Kreppel as a commanding Commendatore, and Rolando Panerai as Masetto. Herbert von Karajan brings a romantic glow to the score, and the Vienna Philharmonic’s strings are particularly noteworthy for their shimmering precision. Previous issues of this recording ran about a half-step flat, a problem now corrected with proper pitch adjustment.
