Pros:

  • Admittedly this Ring Cycle gets off to a rather tame start with this performance of Das Rheingold. As Wotan Randolph Symonette possesses an impressive instrument, but lacks the dynamic and dramatic range to really carry this opera.
  • Grace Hoffman's elegant mezzo-soprano gives Fricka a touch of humanity that is rare in this role.
  • Arnold Quennet paces the evening very well.

Cons:

  • The sound lacks depth.
