The radiant Gré Brouwenstijn possessed a voice with both dramatic cut and lyrical finesse making her perfectly at home in both the German and Italian repertoire. This versatility makes her particularly well-suited to the role of Amelia in Un Ballo in maschera as Verdi calls on his soprano to sing some very dramatic music along with melodic lines that are steeped in bel canto tradition. Giuseppe Zampieri sings Riccardo. Zampieri possessed a lovely dark-hued tenor voice which showed potential for the great dramatic tenor roles. Sadly, he never lived up to the promise of his younger years and his performance here, although admirably sung, reveals some troubling technical issues which likely led to his disappearing from the opera scene rather early. Scipio Colombo delivers a robust Renato, Anny Delorie is an earthy Ulrica and Eugenia Ratti charms without being overly chirpy as Oscar. The sound is excellent.
