Johanna Meier was a singer who could seemingly flourish in any style, including Wagner, Strauss and Verdi. Here she gets a chance to exhibit the latter and delivers a performance that is remarkable both for its power and delicacy at the same time. Ermanno Mauro makes a sturdy Gustavo. Pablo Elvira is an excellent Anckerström. The mark of a good opera conductor is the degree of character they can bring to a score. Julius Rudel is truly one of the best in this regards (having worked with him, I can attest that at times he would actually give cues in the character of whomever was on the receiving end at that moment.) The sound is very good.
