This recording of Manon Lescaut is valuable as it showcases a young Giuseppe Giacomini at the onset of his great career. In 1972 Giacomini's voice was surprisingly more tenorial in timbre and bears an eerie similarity to a young Mario Del Monaco. The ease and power of his voice are astonishing. Why his name is not mentioned more in the pantheon of great tenors is beyond me. The rest of the cast is very good particularly the Manon of Anna Maria Balboni. Her voice is plangent and she succeeds in conveying both the innocence of the character without sacrificing the opulence of Puccini's line. The sound is very good.
