Opera in English works best when you have singers who understand true commitment to text and a love for their native tongue. Not too disparage my countrymen, but this is an aspect that the Britons seem to excel at and this all British cast of The Pearl Fishers bares this out. The surprise of the cast is that all the singers, at least on paper; seem to have voices over-sized for Bizet's lyrical compositional style. Nonetheless they all manage superbly. The stand out for me is the Nadir of Charles Craig. It is hard to believe that a tenor who would go on to sing Otello could possess the lyricism and technique for this part, but he proves himself by delivering his aria with elan and ease of production. Peter Glossop alternates beautifully from gruff to mellifluous tones. Ava June is radiant as Leïla. The sound is slightly muffled.
