Performances of Mefistofele are rare.  Rarer still are performances of Mefistofele with three great singers singing the leads. Here we have the latter.  Nicolai Ghiaurov sings the title part with style and force.  In the sixties his voice was capable of warm velvety tones and was so booming that it could make the Arena di Verona seem like an intimate black box theater.  Carlo Bergonzi is perfect as Enrico.   The daunting vocal lines do not faze him the slightest.  In the duet with Elena he musters his spinto reserves.   Gabriella Tucci matches Bergonzi in style and elegance.  The sound is very good although there is an over eager prompter.
