If you’re a fan of Gwyneth Jones, this recording of Götterdämmerung is an absolute treasure. It captures the Welsh soprano at the peak of her powers, combining immense dramatic intensity with the lyrical finesse that defined her early career. Her performance is nothing short of extraordinary.

Jess Thomas, though slightly past his prime and sounding somewhat dry, handles the demanding role of Siegfried with commendable skill. Karl Ridderbusch delivers an intriguing Hagen, portraying him with a stately cold-bloodedness that feels more calculated than unhinged.

Pierre Boulez’s conducting is inspired from start to finish, clearly energized by the caliber of the production and the stellar cast. The second act, in particular, is a tour de force—arguably the most thrilling rendition I’ve ever heard. The sound quality is excellent, and I’ve included the applause at the end, which features a prominent mix of cheers and boos. This recording is not only a testament to the performance but also a reminder of the uproar it sparked—complete with riots and police intervention. Not bad for a work celebrating its centennial at the time!
