La Voix humaine

Francis Poulenc (1899–1963)

DESCRIPTION

Magda Olivero offers a devastating portrayal of “Elle,” capturing both the vulnerability and volatility of the character with remarkable expressive power. That she was nearly 60 at the time of this performance makes her achievement all the more extraordinary—her voice remains pliant and emotionally charged, channeling a verismo intensity that cuts to the bone. Her final utterance of "Io t'amo" before she gets off the phone with her lover is particulalry chilling. The only drawback is the microphone placement, which unfortunately favors the orchestra over the voice.
