Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier - A. Konetzni, Stevens, Schmidt-Stein, List; E. Kleiber. Buenos Aires, 1938

$12.95

Description:

Fans of Carlos Kleiber’s legendary interpretation of Der Rosenkavalier will find much to appreciate in this earlier reading by his father, Erich Kleiber. While there’s a clear family resemblance in their approaches—both sensitive to the intricate layering and emotional nuance of Strauss’s wistful comedy—Erich’s interpretation leans more toward structural precision and rhythmic clarity, where Carlos often favored atmosphere and elegance. The result is a performance that is intellectually alert yet still emotionally resonant.

Anny Konetzni, as the Marschallin, reveals a natural affinity for Strauss, her voice soaring above the orchestra with purity and ease. Her interpretation brings to mind the nobility and tonal warmth of Zinka Milanov. A young Risë Stevens, still in her twenties, contributes a radiant and vibrant Octavian, full of youthful vitality and vocal richness. Emmanuel List brings elegant weight to Ochs, portraying him with enough dignity to remain sympathetic even as the character faces humiliation in the final act.

The sound is certainly good for 1938, though there is a brief patch of static near the beginning of Act III.
