Glyndebourne seems like the ideal setting for one of Strauss' most intimate operas.  During her Act I Monologue after everyone has left her room, the Marschallin, played to great affect by Régine Crespin, genuinely seems as if she is having a conversation with herself.   That effect would be impossible in a large house.   Elisabeth Söderström shows that Mezzos do not hold the patent on the title role.   She would go on to be a wonderful Marschallin.   Anneliese Rothenberger is a charming Sophie and floats her lines in the duet beautifully.
