Elisabeth Söderström did much during her career to advance the reputation of Leos Janacek. Despite the fact that many sopranos wait until there declining years to assume this relatively untaxing part, she made the decision to attack it in her prime. More than anything Emilia Marty requires enormous glamour and Söderström does not disappoint. Her voice conveys the character's outward beauty and she shapes the language in this French-language version with great nuance highlighting the world-weariness of the protagonist. The rest of the cast is solid and the sound is outstanding.
