Pros:
- Astrid Varnay and Wolfgang Windgassen are in top form, and are well-matched as Brünnhilde and Siegfried.
- Josef Greindl brings a wonderful half-human quality to Hagen.
- Jean Madeira delivers Waltraute's monologue with vivid engagement.
- Elisabeth Grümmer may not have wanted to be remembered as the greatest Gutrune of all time, but, as far as I'm concerned, she can have that accolade along with all of her other achievements.
- It wouldn't be a Bayreuth performance if there wasn't a remarkable cameo from an up-and-coming singer. In this case it is the Third Norn courtesy of Rita Gorr.
- Please appreciate the Bayreuth chorus, not only for their excellent ensemble, but also their engagement in the drama and the text.
Cons:
- My only complaint is an interpretive one. Hagen's Act II "call" is a little too slow and robs the moment of its menace.
