I could practically feel the midsummer air emanating from my speakers while listening to this recording of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg featuring an all-star cast. Josef Greindl’s Hans Sachs is a little on the rough side but still embodies all of the cobbler’s warmth and intellect. Wolfgang Windgassen seems the relish a chance to use his remarkable legato in the role of Walther von Stolzing, combining his signature vocal heft with his admirable ease of production. Elisabeth Grümmer is radiant as Eva Pogner; her silky soprano relishing the high notes that most sopranos lunge at. The rest of the cast includes Theo Adam as Veit Pogner, Ludwig Weber is Fritz Kothner and Gerhard Stolze as a puckish David. The sound is very good.
In Mono.
