Oliviero de Fabritiis remained loyal to Elena Souliotis long after the operatic world at large was done with her. He saw the value of this artist, warts and all, and wanted to share her with the world. This recording comes from a concert performance. The lighter rehearsal process may have suited Elena Souliotis vocal state as she shows that she still knows a thing or two about singing. Her aria and cabaletta may lack the weight of her earlier years but they are expertly crafted and very exciting (with a few simplifications.) Cornell MacNeil was going very strong in 1974. It is amazing how much his voice opens up about the stave. He had a top that any tenor would want and low notes that any bass would envy. Boris Christoff lends his signature gravitas to Zaccaria. The sound is good.
