In a time when it was fashionable to import Italian singers for Verdi, it is admirable that Covent Garden decided to use a home grown baritone, Peter Glossop, in the title role of Nabucco. He shows that Italians do not hold the exclusive rights to sublime legato singing as well as ringing high notes. Elena Souliotis was a few years south of her prime in 1972. The voice lacks some of the heft and beauty of her early years. Still, she manages very well in what is probably Verdi's most difficult soprano role. David Ward is a majestic Zaccaria and Colin Davis brings spirit and vigor to Verdi's score. The sound is muffled but adequate.
