This CD of highlights from Il Trovatore is only for those who absolutely love Anita Cerquetti, Carlo Bergonzi and/or Jean Madeira. The sound is far from ideal. However, if you can condition your ears to sift through the less than perfect sound, you will find that a fantastic performance emerges. Anita Cerquetti is radiant as Leonora bringing to my mind the voice of Zinka Milanov. Carlo Bergonzi delivers a thoughtful Manrico highlighting the lover more than the warrior. Jean Madeira, to pardon the expression, is a wonderfully campy Azucena.
