Description:
In the interest of full disclosure, the sound quality on this recording is not great. The dynamic range is somewhat narrow, and there are occasional pops. However, for those familiar with the opera, this performance remains highly satisfying, supported by a stellar cast. Régine Crespin is radiant as the Marschallin, captured at the absolute peak of her abilities. Her portrayal, particularly the way she floats the line "die silberne Ros'n" at the end of Act I, is absolutely unforgettable. Kerstin Meyer's handsome mezzo finds a perfect home in the role of Octavian, while Teresa Stich-Randall's lush soprano adds a richness to Sophie, giving the role more substance than is often heard from soubrettes typically cast in this part.
