Everytime I hear Pelléas et Mélisande I lambast myself for not knowing it better. In many ways Debussy was the pivot between romanticism and modernism and within his score you can see how he was both looking backwards to Wagner and paving the way for composers like Berg. This performance features the radiant Victoria De Los Angeles as Mélisande. De Los Angeles delivers a subtle performance every now and then giving us brief glimpses into Mélisande's inner life and then quickly covering it in a veil of mystery. She is joined by Pierre Mollet as Pelléas who brings equal nuance. Joseph Rouleau is a stand-out as Arkel. The sound is good.
