Any fan of this opera knows that no matter how glittering the cast the true test of a performance of Le Nozze di Figaro is if the ensemble is able to convey the humanity of this opera.  This performance achieves that magic due in part to the great Le Nozze di Figaro of Walter Berry.  His was never a glamorous voice but he conveys all of the charm, elegance and intelligence of the character.  Victoria de los Angeles' soft toned soprano conveys a fragility to the Countess.   She sings both arias with incredible finesse.  The true standout in the cast is the boisterous Cherubino of Christa Ludwig.  It is a shame that these days mezzos won't alternate between Amneris, Kundry and Cherubino.  If they did it may mean greater longevity in their careers and it would also treat the audience to exciting, full-throated singing in Mozart.  The sound is excellent.
