It has been said that to perform Il Trovatore, all one needs is four of the greatest singers in the world. This performance proves that, in a pinch, only three are necessary. The fourth, little-known baritone Ladislaus Konya, is no slouch, but he’s pretty much blown off the stage by the other principals. Carlo Cossutta is the rare Manrico who sounds equally at home in the tender passages as the stentorian ones, particularly in his Act III aria “Ah si, ben mio.” Fiorenza Cossotto’s Azucena is of well-known quality, but she is in excellent form even by her own standards, sounding bone-chilling. Martina Arroyo’s lush auburn soprano spins Leonora’s arias out effortlessly. Charles Mackerras leads the performance masterfully, and the sound is excellent.
