Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Hopf, Ligendza, Balzani, Neidlinger, Sotin, Dermota; C. Kleiber. Wien, 1973

$12.95

Description:

The undeniable star of this recording is the conductor, Carlos Kleiber. While it remains a great loss that he confined himself to such a limited operatic repertoire, the works he cherished—La Bohème, Der Rosenkavalier, and Tristan und Isolde—received performances of extraordinary nuance and insight under his baton. His approach to the Liebestod is a prime example, beginning with an almost ethereal transparency in the pianos and building an exquisitely controlled crescendo toward the final, resplendent climax.

The cast is strong as well. Catarina Ligendza, a frequent Isolde in Kleiber’s performances, seems entirely in sync with his vision. Her voice leans toward the lighter side, which lends her portrayal an unusual sense of approachability. Hans Hopf, while impressive in the dramatic outbursts, struggles when required to sing softly, with occasional lapses in pitch. Hans Sotin brings a rich, resonant presence to Marke, while Gustav Neidlinger’s Kurwenal, though somewhat gruff, remains consistently compelling from a dramatic standpoint.
