Although Jean Cox sang the role of Siegfried many times throughout the 70s, he hardly distinguished himself higher than the level of "serviceable" in the eyes of many opera lovers. This recording, made in 1971 when the roles was still relatively new to him, shows flashes of brilliance that I hadn't heard in his subsequent performances. His tone is remarkably steady and has a burnished lyricism not unlike Windgassen. He is certainly matched well with Catarina Ligendza whose youthful tone manages the short but athletic Siegfried Brünnhilde with seeming ease (topped off with a gleaming high C.) It is a testament to Theo Adam's artistry how effortlessly he alters his vocal color to convincingly shift to the world-wary Wanderer from his brash and youthful Wotan of the earlier operas. The sound is excellent.
