Falstaff
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1883)
DESCRIPTION
While a performance of Falstaff inevitably hinges on the strength of its ensemble, the title role bears a unique burden: it must balance the grotesque with the grand, the charming with the incorrigible. Geraint Evans meets this challenge with disarming assurance, capturing the complexity of the character in both vocal and dramatic terms. The supporting cast proves equally committed, with standout contributions even in the smaller roles. Regina Resnik gives Mistress Quickly a bold, assertive presence, her vocal coloration appropriately brassy and spirited.
Mirella Freni and Luigi Alva, portraying Nannetta and Fenton, elevate their roles beyond their typical narrative function, bringing genuine charm and lyrical finesse to their scenes. Mariella Angioletti as Alice may not reach quite the expressive heights of her colleagues, yet her performance remains commendable and poised. Under Carlo Maria Giulini’s direction, the pacing is measured without losing vitality; his interpretation allows Verdi’s textures and dramatic shifts to unfold with clarity. The recorded sound supports the performance effectively.
