Raina Kabaivanska was always more of a singer's singer. Her voice may have lacked the bloom and beauty of her colleagues, however, she did possess a rock solid technique that allowed her to sing a wide range of repertoire (and well into her 60s), an excellent sense of Italian style and a dramatic sense that brought the audience in to the inner emotional life of the character. As Butterfly, she asserts that this role may be one of her finest. Even though her voice had a good amount of steel in it, it was otherwise a lyrical instrument achieving the rarest of feats: a Cio-Cio San who sounds like a young girl while still coping with the spinto outbursts. The only other stand-out of the cast is Bruno Prevedi who delivers a brash and swaggering Pinkerton. The sound is good.
