Captured in extremely good sound, this is a thunderously well-sung Turandot. The smaller roles are cast perfectly, from Virgilio Carboni's voice-of-doom Mandarin to that rarest of things, an entertaining Ping-Pang-Pong trio. Galina Vishnevskaya is a piteous, limpid Liù whose dying aria luxuriates in the her legendary top. Little need be said about the Turandot and the Calàf. Franco Corelli and Birgit Nilsson's pairing in this opera was generally one for the ages, and so it is here. The only disappointment is Gianandrea Gavazzeni, who seems to think the opera only has two speeds: zero and sixty. But whenever someone opens their mouths, the performance is a treat.
