Wagner: Tannhäuser

Beirer, Tebaldi, Pery, Tagliabue, Christoff; Böhm

Napoli, 1950

$14.95

Description:

Karl Böhm encouraged Renata Tebaldi to delve into more Germanic repertoire, but she hesitated due to the language barrier. It's easy to see why Böhm recognized such potential in the young Tebaldi—she possessed all the qualities of a great Wagnerian singer: stamina, power, and a pure, luminous tone.

At first, it might feel a bit disorienting to hear Hans Beirer singing his part in German while the rest of the cast performs in Italian. However, this incongruity quickly fades, especially given Beirer's nuanced performance. A seasoned Tannhäuser, he imbues the character with a humanity and immediacy that can make an often unsympathetic role more compelling. Meanwhile, singers like Carlo Tagliabue and Boris Christoff underscore the Italianate elements of Wagner’s writing with their expressive interpretations.

Karl Böhm conducts with precision and restraint, delivering an excellent and straightforward performance. The sound quality is solid.
