Wagner: Siegfried
Windgassen, Varnay, Hotter, Stolze, Andersson; Knappertsbusch
Bayreuth, 1958
$9.48
Description:
Wolfgang Windgassen's Siegfried strikes an ideal balance between youthful insolence and unexpected sweetness, capturing the contradictions of the character effortlessly. As the Wanderer, Hans Hotter brings his usual gravitas and insight, even if the very top of the voice occasionally betrays some dryness. In her brief yet memorable appearance at the end of Act III, Astrid Varnay spins out a legato line with such finesse, it would leave even the most seasoned bel canto specialist envious. Gerhard Stolze gives us a delightfully theatrical Mime, teetering on the edge of caricature but never losing the glimmers of pathos and humanity that ground the role.
