Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

Prohaska, Lorenz, Müller, Fuchs, Greindl; Furtwängler

Bayreuth, 1943

$18.95

Description:

Wilhelm Furtwängler brings a uniquely romantic touch to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, infusing the score with warmth, breadth, and an emotional elasticity that is rarely heard.

Jaro Prohaska delivers a dignified and steadfast Hans Sachs, his performance marked by vocal resilience and interpretive depth. Eugen Fuchs gives a standout turn as Beckmesser—memorable for its characterful detail and comic precision, yet never lapsing into caricature.

There are a few cuts in this performance, including one before David's scene in Act I and another at the end of the first scene in Act III, but these do little to diminish the impact of an otherwise exceptional interpretation.
