The cast in this performance of *Der fliegende Holländer* may not initially grab your attention, but don't be quick to move on. This is a very compelling performance, largely due to the insightful leadership of Vittorio Gui. Gui was a master Wagnerian, and part of his brilliance came from his background, which was unmoored from the traditions of the German conducting schools. His fresh perspective reveals much about the music and drama of the piece. Siw Ericsdotter is a new discovery for me, and she excels as Senta, her steely voice fitting the role perfectly. Tomislav Neralic sings the title role with ease and refinement.
