Wagner: Das Rheingold
Symonette, Hoffman, Schachtschneider, Beresford; Quennet
Düsseldorf, 1966
$9.95
Description:
This Das Rheingold serves as a somewhat restrained opening to the Düsseldorf Ring Cycle. Randolph Symonette brings a commanding vocal presence to Wotan, but his performance is somewhat undercut by a limited dynamic and dramatic range that leaves the character feeling monochromatic. In contrast, Grace Hoffman lends uncommon warmth and humanity to Fricka, her elegant mezzo-soprano adding nuance to a role often portrayed with stern detachment. Arnold Quennet leads the performance with steady, well-judged pacing, giving the opera a sense of cohesion even when the dramatic stakes feel muted. While the sound lacks depth, the vocal contributions—especially from Hoffman—make this a worthy listen.
