At first glance, the casting of Renata Scotto as Amelia in Un Ballo in maschera may raise eyebrows, but underestimating this artist proves ill-advised. She neither tries to inflate her voice into a more dramatic mold nor retreats from the role’s demands. Instead, she brings to it the same stylistic integrity, disciplined vocalism, and deep sensitivity to text that defined her finest bel canto portrayals. Luciano Pavarotti is captured here at his peak, merging lyric warmth with a command of Verdian weight that few tenors have so seamlessly achieved.
