This recording of Un Ballo in maschera finds a young Eva Marton in spectacular voice and ready to take the world by storm. Her shimmering soprano manages both the long Verdian melodies as well as the dramatic outbursts with astonishing ease. Ermanno Mauro’s voice is a little monochromatic, but the vocal color he brings to the proceedings is still quite appealing. Francesch Chico-Bonet, a baritone I had never heard before, is quite good as Renato, bringing an anguished intensity to ”Eri tu” that is quite moving.
