Verdi: Otello (In Swedish)
Svanholm, Normdo-Løvberg, S. Björling; Ehrling
Stockholm, 1953
$9.95
Description:
The role of Otello is by far the most heroic of all Verdi tenor parts, which has led many Heldentenors to take on the title role. Set Svanholm exemplifies why this casting choice works so well. His burnished tenor infuses the character with a tortured quality, even during the relative calm of the love duet.
Sigurd Björling takes on the role of Iago. While more of a bass-baritone and unable to sing the A naturals in the drinking song, his dark, menacing tone adds a formidable edge to the character. Sung in Swedish, this performance benefits from the unique interpretive touches of the cast. The sound is excellent.
