This performance of Otello offers an interesting glimpse at some unknown Italian singers from the 1940s. Renato Gigli (no relation to Beniamino) sings the title part. Gigli was a favorite of Mascagni appearing in many of his operas. As Otello his voice lacks some of the heft that one might expect, but he manages to use his easy legato to great effect, particularly during the Act I love duet. Gabriella Gatti is an angelic Desdemona and Piero Biasini is a robust Iago. The recording was transferred from LP and at times has some scratchiness.
