Piero Cappuccilli's Iago is the standout of this performance of Otello. He brings a suave malevolence to the role, and is equally effective in the declamatory sections like the "Credo" as he is in the more intimate moments like "Era la notte." As Otello and Desdemona, Hans Beirer and Ingrid Bjoner skew a little Germanic, but what you lose in Italianate style you gain in Wagnerian opulence.
