If this performance of Nabucco were to occur today on almost any opera stage, especially in Italy, it would be considered a very special night indeed. But by the standards of 1959, it was simply another night at the opera. Ettore Bastianini is an exciting, fearsome king, and he and a note-perfect Margherita Roberti make a meal of their Act III confrontation. Paolo Washington’s sonorous bass provides the other standout performance, and the chorus is in excellent form throughout.
