In the 70s Margaret Price's voice was made for Verdi and this performance of Don Carlo captures her at her soaring peak. The rest of the cast creates a compelling, if not history-making performance. The stand-outs are a young Wolfgang Brendel as an ardent Posa and Ruggero Raimondi as a world-weary Filippo. Ruth Falcon, as the heavenly voice, is a delicious luxury. It is nice to hear a voice that is both angelic and can soar in this brief but important moment. The sound is only fair.
