Verdi: Aida (In German) Zadek, Höngen, Rosvaenge, Metternich, Schmidt-Isserstedt. Hamburg, 1951
$9.95
Description:
This recording of Aida may not be the most Italianate you’ll encounter, but it features some outstanding German singers. Hilde Zadek brings a youthful sheen to the title role, with a steely and impressively secure upper register. Helge Rosvaenge delivers a burly tenor that excels in Verdi’s trumpet-like passages while also offering beautifully sweet, soft singing.
Elisabeth Höngen, though lacking the vocal glamor of someone like Simionato, gives a commendable performance. However, the role ultimately doesn’t feel like the most natural fit for her voice. The sound is excellent.
