Captured in excellent sound, this recording of Elektra features Gladys Kuchta at the peak of her powers in the title role. Kuchta proves herself a compelling alternative to Nilsson, with a voice that is both steely and warm, and at times, strikingly beautiful.
Jean Madeira delivers a chilling Klytämnestra, while still showcasing the ability to produce a lush, expressive tone when needed. Hildegard Hillebrecht brings a winsome quality to Chrysothemis, even if her voice is somewhat monochromatic. The sound is excellent.
