Ariadne auf Naxos

Richard Strauss (1864–1949)

DESCRIPTION

Gwyneth Jones did not sing Ariadne often, which is unfortunate given the commanding vocal power and, even more strikingly, the technical control she brings to the role. Her Ariadne is both vocally majestic and emotionally grounded, a rare combination that lends the character unusual depth and authority.

By contrast, Edita Gruberova offers a Zerbinetta of striking intimacy, conveying the character's earthy humanity even while simultaneously negotiating some of the most technically difficult music for coloratura soprano ever written. Trudeliese Schmidt as the Composer nearly matches Jones in sheer vocal heft, shaping the role with fervent musicality. Josef Hopfwieser proves a somewhat limpid Bacchus, lacking the ideal heroic presence.

Wolfgang Sawallisch guides the orchestra with deft assurance, effortlessly shifting from Straussian opulence to passages of Mozartian delicacy.
