DESCRIPTION
Exciting by the cast but initially disappointed by the overall sound quality, I decided to press on in hopes that the performances could transcend the poor sound. For the most part, my perseverance was rewarded by a compelling performance. Lucilla Udovich, an American soprano whose career flourished primarily in Italy, brings a voice of remarkable precision and brilliance. Her steely, laser-focused high notes are tempered by a vocal glamor that proves both alluring and assured. Franco Corelli matches her with equal magnetism, delivering a Calàf that is commanding, resonant, and vocally near flawless.
Perhaps most intriguing is the presence of Leyla Gencer as Liù. Rather than leaning into the customary fragility of the role, Gencer presents a Liù of unusual strength—vocally poised, emotionally resolute, and distinct in character.
