La Bohème

Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924)

DESCRIPTION

At first glance, the main appeal of this recording lies in the Rodolfo of Plácido Domingo, captured in his vocal prime. Although Domingo proves remarkable in the role—more on that below—the true revelation is the exquisite Mimì of Luisa Bosabalian. Choosing the security of a long-standing engagement with the Hamburg State Opera over the itinerant glamour embraced by many of her peers, Bosabalian limited her international exposure. What the wider operatic world may have missed, Hamburg gained in full. Her singing balances finely etched phrasing with Puccinian breadth, rising effortlessly to climactic peaks and retreating with a vocal subtlety that is nothing short of sublime.

Domingo brings a compelling mixture of youthful joy and emotional urgency to Rodolfo. While the high note in “Che gelida manina” slightly evades him, his ardent commitment throughout more than compensates. As Musetta, Sylvia Geszty offers a richly colored tone, and Nello Santi conducts with a discerning sensitivity, allowing the orchestra to breathe with the singers and align closely with the dramatic flow.
