If you love this opera, or if you love Beverly Sills and Nicolai Gedda, then this could be one of those sets that seems to occupy a permanent spot next to the stereo. Sills and Gedda are at their absolute best and achieve a rapport that is electric. Gedda in particular seems inspired to new levels of abandon that I had hitherto not associated with this singer while Sills conveys all of the complexities of the title role even in the midst of delivering some very impressive vocal gymnastics. The sound is excellent.
