Even in his 60s, Mario Del Monaco proves he still had the vocal power to deliver a commanding Canio. While subtlety was never his strong suit, his performance here crackles with raw, almost feral intensity. Lotte Rysanek offers an elegant contrast with her soft-grained soprano, providing a poignant foil to Del Monaco’s volatile clown. Giuseppe Taddei, though also in the later stages of his career, brings smooth menace to Tonio, rounding out a cast of seasoned veterans who still have plenty to say. The result is a gripping and unapologetically bold reading of Pagliacci.
