Britten: Gloriana (In German)
Mödl, Kotscha, Bähnke; Schwinckert
Münster, 1968
$9.95
Description:
This performance of Gloriana is testament to the fact that during his life Britten was more than just a homegrown English composer, but a true international phenomenon. Elizabeth I proves a perfect vehicle for Martha Mödl. Mödl throws herself into the role with the same conviction that made her performances of Wagner so thrilling. At times, the voice reveals some frayed edges, but she uses this to her benefit, especially in her final scene when Elizabeth is a mere shell of her former glory. Friedrich Kotscha is a very good Robert Devereux. If he lacks the subtlety of Peter Pears he makes up for it with his virile and heroic vocal disposition. The sound is generally good although there is some music missing from the opening of the opera as well as the last few minutes.
