Description:
Shirley Verrett's nonchalant Carmen is a magnetic counterpart to Franco Corelli's fiery Don José. Their chemistry builds throughout the evening and culminates in a final duet that crackles with tension. Even as Carmen meets her end, Verrett commands the moment, bringing an intensity that overshadows even Corelli's explosive vocalism. Piero Cappuccilli, singing Escamillo in Italian, makes a compelling case for casting a true baritone in the role, his voice adding strength and presence to the character.
There are a few technical issues to note: the first five minutes of the opera are missing, as is the opening of the Act III chorus.
