Leyla Gencer's take on Norma leans more toward the earthy than the ethereal, but the result is no less compelling. What she may lack in sheer tonal purity, she more than compensates for with dramatic conviction, vocal authority, and masterful control. Her performance is rich in nuance and emotional truth, shaped with intelligence and finesse.
Adriana Lazzarini, as Adalgisa, falls a bit short by comparison, unable to match the dramatic or vocal presence of her counterpart. Nonetheless, the performance as a whole remains compelling, thanks to Gencer’s magnetic command of the stage.
