Norma
Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835)
DESCRIPTION
Despite never ascending to the highest ranks of the operatic stage, Marisa Galvany maintained a devoted following who admired her searing vocal intensity, formidable range, and rock-solid technique—qualities that enabled her to master an unusually broad spectrum of roles. In this performance as Norma, she reveals a more refined aspect of her artistry, delivering a vocal masterclass in bel canto control and style. Yet she turns with apparent ease to the thrilling, scorched-earth singing that made her such an electrifying Abigaille and Lady Macbeth.
She is well matched by Viorica Cortez, whose Adalgisa is shaped with opulence and grace. Renato Francesconi provides a sturdy and dependable Pollione, while Bonaldo Giaiotti lends resonant authority to Oroveso. The Caracas chorus also deserves mention for its remarkable precision and clarity.
